Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR)

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a government research institute. It is supervised by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education. The main field of research activities of HCMR extends to all areas of the aquatic environment. As a Centre, it provides necessary services and technical support for all issues of the aquatic environment. IMBBC is one of the three Institutes of HCMR. Its scientific object is research and technological development, which mainly refers to aquaculture, biodiversity, the structure and dynamics of the marine ecosystem, the management of ecosystems, the genetics of marine organisms, the search for new or improved products and organisms, as well as the certification of the authenticity and origin of organisms and their products. In particular, in the field of aquaculture, the scientific interest of IMBBC focuses on the understanding of biology, physiology, pathology, ecology, metabolism and genetics of farmed or potentially farmed aquatic organisms, the improving of their production and quality, in the interaction of aquaculture and the environment, in the improvement of breeders, in the composition and technology of the fish feed manufacture, in the selection and cultivation of new species, in the development of production systems and management methodologies for all stages of the development of farmed organisms, monitoring and enhancing the physical productivity of water systems as well as aquarium management methodologies.

Yannis Kotzamanis is a Principal Researcher in the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.

Research interests

  • Evaluation of the nutritional quality and effects of novel feed ingredients, supplements and bioactive compounds on growth performance, digestibility, quality and health of reared fish larvae, juveniles and adults
  • Assessment of nutritional requirements and formulation of feeds of cultured fish and new candidate species
  • Investigation of the molecular and physiological mechanisms, which underlie, control and regulate fish appetite, growth, fat deposition and disease resistance using novel techniques from the field of proteomics and metabolomics
